All of us have had moments of anger in our lives. I know I certainly have and expect you have, too.

Anger is normal, but some people have trouble controlling it. This can create lots of negative effects. It can ruin relationships, careers, or even lead to crime.

Learning to deal with and control your anger is very important. Here are some suggestions to help manage your anger.

1. Do you have someone in your life that is easy to TALK to? Who is understanding? Perhaps you have a family member or close friend who qualifies. Try talking your anger out with them. This lets you tell your side of the story and hopefully you will listen as your friend explains the story from a different perspective. Talking it out, listening to other ideas, may help you to understand your anger and thus manage it.

2. When you are in a state of anger, try WRITING down your thoughts and feelings. When you write, no one talks back - isn't that great? When you write you will also likely identify some of the "triggers" that actually cause your outbursts. Use pen and paper or the computer - both work well.

3. Do you get so angry that you want to hit someone or just do something PHYSICAL? You really want to "take it out" on the other person for what was done to you. Instead of assaulting the person, get physical at the gym. Or even get physical with a pillow. Really let that pillow "have it!" Releasing all that energy and anger with it hurts no one but helps you to get over your anger.

4. Can you take a vacation or just get away to spend some time alone? Removing yourself from the environment that makes you angry and frustrated will give you the opportunity to see things differently. You may also find solutions to the problem.

5. Prayer and meditation work well for some people with anger management problems. Both of these activities give you a chance to be alone with your thoughts in a way to release tension. Letting go of your anger and negative thoughts will make a positive change in your life.

6. Other techniques include deep breathing exercises, physical exercise, getting more sleep, getting outside and into nature, learning to laugh, playing an instrument or listening to music. Many people find these are great ways of getting control of their anger.

It is important to work on using some of these techniques to help you manage your anger. If left uncontrolled, anger brings about many adverse consequences. Control your anger and live a longer and more positive life.
