Now comes the ever-tacit question that every investor faces, be it daily, weekly, monthly or from time to time:
Am I getting the best results possible for the current market conditions?
If investors do not ask themselves this query they are likely leaving money in the market for someone else to acquire. Failure to ask the profit-optimization question may be the result of several things -
a) Distractions - too much focus on other facets of life or work
b) Complacency - lack of scrutiny on the market and the portfolio
c) Monotony - trading and investing becomes unremarkable and boring
d) Ignorance - the trader/investor is uninformed that better methods or tools are available and performing well.
Unfortunately it usually takes a major trading strategy regression to snap an investor back into focus on the market and trading strategies. This is usually an inordinate way to re-direct full concentration toward investment systems.
When the unfavorable attention-getting trading strategy event occurs, blaming outside reasons is not productive. In the trite but true pronouncement, "it is what it is." The energy should be focused on future avoidance of the adverse event and how to persist on top of the market.
I realize this sounds like simple, obvious advice. But does the shoe fit? What if the big misfortunate event hasn't happened yet? Is every investor on top of his money? Is every trader at the height of his game? Or could everyone find out how to invest smarter?
The first place to look is new strategies, techniques and systems. What if a new strategy has been developed and is being implemented by other investors? Even if one person thinks a new methodology won't work for them, then at least by knowing of it he/she is aware of what new system others are using.
But often an inquisitive and explorative investors finds there is in fact more to know and new things to try. This is a great step toward avoidance of future market adversity. He/she has thereby learned how to find and employ a new trading strategy.
Caution: motivated investors athirst to try a new strategy should not take a swing at every pitch that comes across the plate, so to speak. Success in investing as in baseball comes from looking for just the right pitch.
Investors striving to improve their portfolio performance should analyze side-by-side comparisons. Study and experiment with assorted new systems or strategies. Be patient. Paper trade (imaginary buys and sells on paper) before investing real hard cash. Find two or even three strategies that work well and run them in tandem. See if they are user-friendly and if they perform as promised.
The same holds true for advisors. Try several and compare their performance. It won't take long to decide whose trading strategy fits your objectives and whose does not. Unless you are tied to your old fraternity brother as your broker for life, always ask around, shop around, analyze and explore the choices.
Be open. You can find some very interesting techniques and systems online. The nice thing about online trading software or systems is that if you paper-trade them for a while and they don't work, you can get a refund of your system cost hassle-free. This is a great edification with a very low cost of tuition.
Find out how to invest smarter. Always enhance your game. And most of all, know the eternal truth that no human on this planet can ever or will ever be able to pick the tops and the bottoms.
