Manicures are done by people that would like to make their hand look decent and more presentable than it currently does or would. It can be done just for that or get it done for special occasions. Getting a manicure usually means when the nails are cut, filed or polished and also when the hands are given special attention.

Other types of nail treatment include getting a artificial nails attached and so on. Some times people will paint small pictures and attach gem stones to the nail. Beauty salons have to follow strict codes of hygiene because of the possibility of spreading infection, so they have to buy and keep tools that can be cleaned regularly.

The trend of growing nails and their up keep goes back more than 4000 years ago both in India and china. In those days they used various herbs and natural polishes for the up keep of the nails. But manicures in the modern sense of the word started in France in the 18th century. Manicures were popular then as know to give the hands and nails a more acceptable look.

In modern times many new products entered the market such as nail gels and artificial nails that can be attached to the nail. The problem with nail gels is that it contains chemicals that may interfere with the health of the nail and cause brittleness and breakages. And this problem can get aggravated when you file them.

The nail file is a tool used by manicurist to shape the nails and it is a relatively recent addition. The different types of nail files are emery files, ceramic, steel and glass. Glass files are even more recent and are considered to be the best for good finishes and cleanliness. They don't chip or break the nail like the other models.
