I do not know of anybody who hasn't been affected by the financial turmoil we have seen over the last couple of years. When you have any wealth at all then you are going to have seen some impact. This has made folks think much more about their investments and start off looking for out other alternative investments.

The reason that men and women are trying to find alternative investments is that returns are not definitely correlated with the returns on normal assets. This indicates that when we have financial events like we have had recently, your entire wealth doesn't take a hit. There is a level of further diversification in there which helps to safeguard you.

Why is diversification good? If you had your cash tied up in conventional asset for example property, stocks, bonds and money then you are likely to have completed poorly over the last couple of years. The stock market has performed poorly for even longer as it's lower than it was 10 years ago. Even if you hold money it truly is likely to be losing its value in actual terms.

I'm not saying to blindly invest in alternative investments which include art, antiques or stamps etc. They've their negatives which I will mention. You do want to have an open mind to them.

What are some the negatives? There is not an active marketplace which means that it isn't so straightforward to offload your investment if you want. Unlike the stock marketplace, there is not generally a buyer. If you have to search for one then this adds to your costs.

A small marketplace location with a lack of participants indicates that it can be difficult to establish proper costs. There also is not a great deal of historical data which indicates that you might need to put some work into establishing a cost for your self. This might be hugely subjective and prone to errors. If you do it nicely although there is usually huge potential in alternative investments.
