When it comes to choosing a good domain name, there are a couple of pointers one must keep in mind.

1. A domain name should reflect your business - Believe it or not, there are many bloggers that use their own name as their domain name. Unless you're a celebrity, this is not recommended. First of all, it does not clear the air on what the blog is all about, and secondly, it does not help you in search engines. Although a good domain name does not necessarily have to be related to the nature of the blog, it's always recommended to do so.

2. Make It Easy To Remember - Domain with an easy to remember name are more likely to spread by word of mouth. You don't want to be the company with terrific website that no one can remember to tell their friends because they can't remember the domain name.

3. Dot Com - Unless you lack of choice, it's best to stick with .com. It is more valuable than say .net in the long run. Most people who use the web still make the assumption that .com is all that is out there. Don't make the mistake of locking out or losing traffic to these.

4. The shorter, the better - You should always go for the shorter name if you can get a meaningful one, though long names doesn't necessarily makes a domain name bad. However, I would recommend to avoid extremely long names verging on 67 characters. Aside from the obvious problem that people might not be able to remember such a long name, it would also be a chore typing it and trying to fit it as a title on your web page.

5. Avoid hyphens and numbers - It's easy to forget the hyphens when typing a name. Many users are used to typing things like freecpluspluscompilers.com but not free-c-plus-plus-compilers.com. They'll probably leave out the hyphens and wind up at your competitor's site.

6. Keep it simple - For the same reason as why you should avoid hyphens and numbers in choosing a domain name, it's best if you make your domain name simple, instead of using an unusual spelling. For example, BlueRight.com is much better than BluRite.com

Before making your final decision, make sure to brainstorm a couple of good domain names to choose from.
