Watch not only the cars or other vehicles on the road, but the bikes and pedestrians as well. By taking a defensive driving course you can learn many things that can help you out. Plus keep in mind many of these things are common sense and something that you should already know.
There are many different situations that will distract you while you're driving that you should try and avoid. Cell phones are possibly one of the biggest modern causes that we face. You take your hands off the wheel to answer the phone or look down. And there you are running into someone or something.
Instead of that you need to look into buying a Bluetooth headset, or simply not using that cell when you are driving. At least with that headset you can still keep your hands on the wheel and be able to get the call. This works great for people who have to have their phone at all times.
Speeding is another problem that many people have when driving. Either leaving late or trying to make it somewhere on time. Or they just simply don't abide by the rules of the road. You shouldn't go over the speed limit so watch just how fast you are going.
As you go faster it will be a lot harder to control your vehicle, and possibly get into a very serious accident. One that could have someone even you losing their life in. So what that speed and make sure that you follow the limits that are set.
Other drivers on the road who aren't paying attention are not going to help you out at all. You will need to be looking far enough ahead that you will be able to avoid someone else who is speeding or weaving in and out of traffic. You shouldn't give yourself so little time to reach a destination that speeding is required to be there on time.
People really need to leave earlier than they normally do, or they should just be late to where they are heading. It's not hard to plan a trip and leave a bit earlier than you were wanting too. That way you can follow the speed and still arrive safely and on time.
Pets or kids in the car are a huge distraction at times. Kids yell for things or start to fight with each other, and what do you do? Turn around and yell at them, or take your eyes off the road for maybe just a second. That's all the time that is needed to be in an accident.
While pets are problems when it comes to jumping around in the car and trying to get your attention. Strap them in so they can't move around and cause those problems. It would be nice if it was that simple with kids, but unfortunately it isn't!
